Richmond, N.Y. (WHAM) - Blue green algae has been found at Sandy Bottom Beach on Honeoye Lake.

The beach is closed as of Tuesday as a result.

Ontario County Public Health Director Mary Beer said the beach will remain closed until the New York State Department of Health clears the area for swimming.

Updates can be found on the Town of Richmond's website.

Blue-green algae blooms are usually strongly colored water (blue-green, green, yellow, white, brown, purple, or red) and have a paint-like appearance with floating mats or scums.

Never drink or cook with untreated water from a source that has blue-green algae. Learn more about blue-green algae here.
