Camper found less than 48 hours after being stolen out of Hilton small business lot
Hilton, N.Y. (WHAM) - The owner of a small family business in Hilton said it's never happened before.
A camper was stolen around 1 a.m. Saturday out of Hushard's RV Center’s parking lot.
"Unfortunately, anybody that takes anything, they just don't care about what they're taking," said Jim Hushard, the owner of the business. "The trailer was locked. I'm afraid they broke into it to get inside. I'm afraid it's destroyed."
Hushard was hopeful the small camper would be found. He said only about 1,000 of the campers are made each year.
According to Hushard, the camper is his. It's worth about $13,000, and could have been a devastating loss on the small family business.
13WHAM spoke with Hushard hours before it was found.
"It's a huge financial burden on me if it doesn't come back,” he said. “"I just took over the business two months ago and just starting out for the season, and that camper will take away pretty much all my profits I have for this year so far."
Quick police work may have saved the business' season. Less than two days after it went missing, Hushard said Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies found the camper.
Around 5 p.m. Sunday, a Monroe County Sheriff's deputy noticed what they believed to be the stolen camper being pulled by a U-Haul truck. The deputy pulled the truck over at West Ridge Road near Elmgrove Road in Greece. Dakota Sarfaty, 22, and Jenelle Whitfield, 33, were taken into custody, along with a third person who was later released and not charged.
Sarfaty and Whitfield were each charged with third-degree criminal possession of a stolen property.
Hushard said he’s thankful for the community’s help in solving this crime. He said the tips and surveillance video from people helped. Hushard said the camper is in good shape.
The theft happened days after a string of burglaries on the west side of the county. Deputies do not believe this is related.
The investigation into this incident is ongoing.
