Rochester, N.Y. – Firefighters across Monroe County received honors Thursday night for their service to the community.

The annual Firefighter Appreciation Dinner recognized firefighters from different departments for their rescue efforts throughout the year.

Many of them said the recognition is humbling.

“It feels great,” said Lieutenant Gregory Borden of the Rochester Fire Department. “Always nice to know that people care about what we do, and it’s kind of a payback.”

“It certainly is nice that everyone in the room that does the same work as you is recognizing you,” said Lieutenant Matthew Sauers of the Rochester Fire Department. “But at the end of the day, it’s humbling because you always think you could have done something different or better.”

The lieutenants were honored for their part in a rope and water rescue on Maplewood Drive in March, when a vehicle went into the Genesee River gorge. Crews worked in low-visibility conditions to save the victim.
