Two facing charges in Sodus double-homicide
Lyons, N.Y/Sodus, N.Y. - The ex-girlfriend of one of the victims in a Sodus double-homicide, as well as her current husband, have been charged in that double-homicide.
Joshua Niles and Amber Washburn were killed last month near their Carlton Street home.
The mother of Niles' children, Charlene Childers, has been charged with conspiracy in the second degree and criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree. A warrant has been issued for her current husband, Timothy Dean, for the charges of first degree murder, two counts of second degree murder and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon.
Dean is currently being held in Texas on unrelated charges. Wayne County Sheriff Barry Virts says the extradition process which would bring him to New York will begin once he is officially arrested. Childers was being held at the Wayne County Jail as a fugitive from justice. Deputies say she was in Texas at the time of the murders.
"It's our belief Dean pulled the trigger," Sheriff Virts said during a media briefing Monday, describing the double-shooting on Carlton Street.
Friends tell 13WHAM News Niles and Childers had been going through a custody battle and, days before his murder, he was awarded custody of their two children.
Virts said deputies had their eyes on Dean for hours the day of the murder.
The investigation, he added, is not over yet.
Virts said the Texas Rangers, Texas DPS, local law enforcement in Texas and the FBI assisted in their investigation. He says the victims' children are in the care of a family member, but added the developments in the case will not bring back their parents.
"I don't know, if you lose a loved one, if whatever justice comes about, that that will ever be enough to replace a loved one," he said.
This is a developing story. 13WHAM will provide updates as they become available.
