Rochester, N.Y. - Crews from the NYS Department of Transportation have removed flagpoles at two different sites along I-490 Friday.

One of the poles sits on the median between 490 East and West at Cobbs Hill, near the Culver Road exit.

The DOT said each pole is "experiencing rigging and lighting issues, which means they are unfortunately unable to fly flags in an appropriate manner."

According to Jordan Guerrein from the NYSDOT, the department has discussed the possibility of having other groups or veterans organizations take over maintenance responsibilities, but the DOT determined that it would be too dangerous to do so.

"Like every decision we make here at NYSDOT, this boils down to the safety of not only our maintenance crews, but the traveling public," said Guerrein, in a statement Friday.
