ATTICA, N.Y. (WHAM)- Police say an Attica Police Officer was assaulted while assisting the Attica Fire Department with a car crash on Thursday.

Attica police say David Woods Jr. of Olean crashed his car into a ditch off of Dunbar in the Town of Attica on April 12th around 5:15 p.m.

An Attica Police Officer, Officer Karl Zufall, responded to Woods' accident to assist the Attica Fire Department.

Police say Officer Zufall requested to get personal items from the car by Woods, however he could not gain access to the car. Woods allegedly then became irate.

The Wyoming County Sheriff's Office says that Woods punched Officer Zufall in the face after that, and hit him multiple times.

Officer Zufall tased Woods in response to the assault, and a struggle ensued.

Woods later kicked Officer Zufall in the knee while being put into a deputy's car. The officer was taken to the Emergency Department at Wyoming County Community Hospital for treatment of injuries to his knee, ribs, back, chest and jaw.

Woods was taken to the Wyoming County Sheriff's Office, where deputies say he refused to take a drug test. He has been charged with multiple crimes, including assault, resisting arrest, and DWI.

He was arraigned in Attica town Court and is expected to appear back on May 7 to answer the charges.
