Deputies: More than 20 credit card fraud cases likely linked to gas pump skimmers
GENESEO, N.Y. (WHAM) - Investigators in Livingston County are working to track down more than 20 separate cases of credit card fraud around the county in the last seven weeks.
Livingston County Sheriff Tom Dougherty said the reports came from people in Livonia, Avon, and Lima who say their credit cards have been fraudulently used at various Walmart stores throughout New York. These reports started to come in on December 14, 2017.
Most, if not all, of the cards were believed to have been compromised at a gas pump where a skimming device captured the user's credit card information. Investigators are working to find the source of the scam for the victims and are working with area gas stations to ensure their gas pumps have not been compromised.
People who bought gas at a gas station in Livingston County should check their credit card accounts for any suspicious activity. If you see anything suspicious, contact your bank immediately and then contact the Sheriff's Office at (585) 243-7100.
