Family reunions help make up for lost time for Hilton half-brothers
Hilton, N.Y. – Two Hilton men recently discovered they are brothers who share a same dad – and even more.
Over Thanksgiving, they shared a van. It was a road trip 40 years in the making. 17 hours of driving and 900 miles could not temper the excitement. Tom Parsons was taking his brother, Sean Freeman, to meet the family he never knew he had.
Between the Parsons and Freeman families, eight people made the trip from Rochester to Missouri.
This was Sean’s first time meeting his extended family. Half-brother Tom had met them in 2014. It was right after he, like Sean, learned he had six other half-siblings. A DNA test their sister took led her to Tom, which led to Sean and their first meeting last month.
Thanksgiving came with 45 years of catching up to do. It has been one family reunion after another. Years have been missed, but they’re instead focusing on what they’ve found.
Tom has stage four endocrine cancer. For him, the reunions have been a gift.
“His family is my out away from it, 150 percent,” he told 13WHAM last month. “When I’m with him, I don’t think about it and it’s a good time. That’s why I’m constantly knocking on your door.”
