Food delivery service 'DoorDash' launches in Rochester
Rochester, N.Y. (13WHAM) - A new food delivery service is joining Uber Eats and Grub Hub in Rochester. It's called DoorDash, and it's a very new tool for local restaurant owners.
The company launched in the area Tuesday. Some restaurant owners have taken notice already.
Nick Garofoli opened Steadfast on East Avenue two months ago. He had never heard of DoorDash until Monday, when he opened his email to find a message from the company.
Garofoli has his doubts when it comes to the company, but from what he knows currently, he thinks it can help grow his business. He says more and more people are wanting food delivered, and that's an opportunity he doesn't want to miss.
"The art of cooking in America, like cooking at home for yourself, is slowly dying," said Garofoli.
"I don’t know if it’s a good trend or not, but it’s certainly hard to ignore as an owner," he added.
Garofoli got an email from the company saying, unless he opted out, DoorDash would include his menu on its website and app for customers to order from directly.
After that, the company's drivers, called "Dashers," deliver the food to the customer. A service fee and option to tip would be added on top of the cost.
Garofoli is also signing for Uber Eats and GrubHub to help grow his business. He says unlike those two companies, he doesn't have to pay DoorDash.
"It works for us, it works for our concept, it works with people within our delivery radius," said Garofoli.
Brent Seals, the Head of Launch for DoorDash, says customers can order from more than 600 restaurants in the Rochester area.
"You're not going to find that selection anywhere else," said Seals.
Meanwhile, Garofoli says he doesn't feel his business necessarily needs three delivery options to help it survive.
But he knows the added exposure, and potential for more customers who may not even step foot in his restaurant, can't hurt.
"I think it’s a logical thing to at least try," said Garofoli.
DoorDash says its now taking applications for drivers in Rochester.
