Free fishing throughout New York State this weekend
The State Department of Environmental Conservation is encouraging New Yorkers to get out and fish this weekend.
June 23 & 24 is one of six free fishing weekends that the state is holding this year.
During these designated free fishing days, residents and non-residents of NYS are allowed to fish for free without a fishing license.
However, all other fishing regulations remain in effect.
The free fishing weekends program began in 1991 to help introduce people to the sport.
Additional Free Fishing Days include National Hunting and Fishing Day (Sept. 22), Veterans Day (Nov. 11), and the weekend preceding Presidents Day (Feb. 16-17, 2019).
There are various fishing education programs conducted by DEC and other groups throughout the state.
