Man found dead in Hamlin house after fire
Hamlin, N.Y. (WHAM) - One person was found dead Thursday morning after a fire at a house in Hamlin.
The fire started just before 2 a.m. at a home on Walker Lake Ontario Road. just north of Church Road.
Crews told 13WHAM two people were in the home. One was able to escape; the body of the second person was found inside in the rubble of the house after it collapsed.
The Monroe County Medical Examiner's Office identified the victim as Richard Haberger, 63.
Firefighters on scene said the wind, which is normal for that area, caused the fire to spread. The home is an old wooden house; it has been deemed a total loss.
Firefighters from Hamlin Morton Walker Fire District were out on a crash call when they received the report of this fire.
Hunter Genrich said he'd known Haberger for most of his life. The two of them worked together on farms and at the Rochester Public Market.
"Sold chickens, produce," said Genrich. "Him and his son grew produce."
He says he hopes Haberger is remembered as a hard worker who cared deeply.
"Always there to help you out," he described.
Fred Harrington said he grew up in the home and said he was devastated to see what happened.
"That's sad," he said. "That's tragic, is what it is, to find out someone had to die in it."
Harrington said he didn't know Haberger, but extended condolences to the family.
"Our prayers and our thoughts are with them," he said. "That's all we can say. It must have been hard for them, too."
Family members say Haberger had plans to go to the Rochester Public Market Thursday. They say it was a passion of his.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
