Body of 6-year-old girl recovered from Erie Canal in Greece
Greece, N.Y. - Greece Police say the body of a six-year-old girl was recovered from the Erie Canal in Greece Thursday night after she had been reported missing earlier in the evening.
Police were dispatched to Henpeck Park around 7 p.m. for the report of a missing six-year-old. Investigators say the girl was with family members, and was last seen near the bank of the canal.
Scuba crews, fire departments and a number of other first responders were called to the scene.
The girl's body, police say, was recovered by scuba teams. Family members later identified the girl as Aliyah Williams.
During a news conference on Friday afternoon, Greece Police Chief Patrick Phelan said Aliyah was with her sister and two other adults at the park. They had been canoeing for a few hours.
Investigators say Aliyah got out of the canoe, went ashore with an adult and went back down to get her sandals from the side of the canal. That is when the girl fell in. She drowned within a few minutes, according to Phelan. There were no witnesses who saw the child fall into the canal.
Phelan added that while the family lost sight of Aliyah, it took them no more than one minute for them to realize something is wrong and call 911.
No foul play is suspected.
The investigation is ongoing as to whether these two adults will face any charges.
The family has a GoFundMe fundraising page to help to cover funeral costs.
