Chili, N.Y. - Sheriff's deputies say everyone was able to escape a house fire on Chili Avenue Tuesday night.

Crews were called to the area of Chili Avenue and Chestnut Drive around 8 p.m. for the report of a fire.

According to firefighters, the fire started in the basement of the home. Because of the way it was constructed, they say, there was nothing stopping the fire from spreading, and it eventually made its way up to the roof.

Five people were in the home at the time. Firefighters say all of them were able to make it out unharmed.

Firefighters from Chili, Gates, Churchville and Clifton responded to the fire, and several departments filled in at the respective departments as backup units.

We're told the frigid temperatures, a frozen fire hydrant and slippery conditions were challenges for crews at the scene.

The house is said to be a total loss.
