Irondequoit, N.Y. – A taxpayer in Irondequoit almost became the victim of a phishing scam. His story is a reminder to be cautious of emails with suspicious links.
Brian Stiehler says he received what looked like an email from the Irondequoit town assessor.
“It wasn’t suspicious, because it was from the town assessor,” he recalled. “And I’ve spoken to her before and sent emails to her before, so I thought it was related to that.”
Stiehler stopped short of clicking an attachment – which contained a virus.
He contacted the town, which confirms the assessor’s email was phished.
