Livingston County Sheriff's K9 dies after 7 dedicated years
GENESEO, N.Y. (WHAM) - A Sheriff's K9 died on Wednesday after becoming ill earlier in the week.
Livingston County Sheriff Dougherty said K9 Gibbs was diagnosed with a large mass in his abdomen.
Gibbs had a procedure done to attempt to remove the mass and repair his organs.
The procedure was unsuccessful and Gibbs died on August 15.
Gibbs was partnered with Sergeant Ryan Swanson for over seven years. The pair was New York State DCJS certified Patrol/Tracking and Narcotics Detection K9 team.
"He was a warrior that would fearlessly protect his handler," the Sheriff's Office said in a statement released on Friday.
The Sheriff's Office also credits Gibbs for lifesaving human tracks and searches, along with numerous dangerous drug alerts.
