Marion widow awarded new roof in photo contest
John Hoagland, President of Trinity Home Renovations approached 13WHAM ABC back in January 2018 with one goal – to help a local family out with a new or repaired roof. “The whole reason we ran the contest was to help a family in need like this”.
During the month of March 2018, families and neighbors from the Rochester area nominated themselves or family members in the Inaugural Rescue My Roof Photo Contest on the 13WHAM Contest Page, the 13WHAM Facebook page or the Trinity Home Renovations Facebook page. A total of 44 participants submitted a photo of their roof in disrepair and a short explanation of why they needed the rescue. The public could then vote up to once per day for their favorite roof entry during a two week voting period. The entry with the most votes would be declared the winner.
One entry stood out from the rest: “Young widow and children need a new roof” submitted on behalf of Chelsea Covey of Marion. “I was deeply moved by all the submissions for the rescue my roof contest, but one brought tears to my eyes,” Hoagland said.
In February 2018, 33-year-old Jason Covey was killed in a car crash in Penfield. Chelsea unexpectedly became a widow with two small children to take care of and a new house that needed some repairs. In a Facebook post on March 1st, Chelsea wrote, “Plans, on top of plans...Jason couldn’t wait to fix things around this house we just bought. He couldn’t wait to update things and make it our own. Build me things I’ve been wanting or just trying to make me happy and give me everything I wanted in our first official home!”
When friend Courtney Grace heard about the contest from a co-worker at Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES, she knew she had to nominate her friend Chelsea. “Losing Jason has been devastating to Chelsea and her children and she has so much to take care of now while also grieving. She truly deserves this new roof and I am so happy to have helped with at least one of her worries. It will mean the world to see Jason’s first homeowner project completed!”
More than 2,700 votes later from over 1,000 participants in 37 states, Chelsea’s entry was declared the winner with 39 percent of the total votes.
“From our entire Trinity Home Renovations family we feel honored and excited to have the opportunity to help Chelsea and her children, by finishing the roofing project Jason was going to do this spring," Hoagland said. "It is our hope by taking away this one burden that we can help the healing process for this family.”
As the Rescue My Roof photo contest winner, Chelsea Covey will receive a roof replacement from Trinity Home Renovations valued up to $10,000.
