Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) - The Mary Cariola Children's Center is taking a closer look at its school safety plan.

On Thursday, staff and family members learned about training and drills. Mary Cariola said it wants families to know they are committed to student safety, in light of recent events around the country and at Mary Cariola itself.

Last week, the Mary Cariola campus on East Henrietta Road was evacuated after a suspicious package was sent to the main building. The package was later determined to be a work of art meant for an exhibition that was sent to the wrong address.

"It is becoming more and more normal and I think that parents are reassured when they know that we have a plan and that it's really highly adapted to the needs of the children," said Laura Wink, a teacher on special assignment with Mary Cariola.

Rochester Police praised staff at the Children's Center, saying their quick notification and safe evacuation of nearly 100 students with disabilities is something to be commended.
