ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHAM) - Deputies in Monroe County are warning the public about a check-cashing scam.
Deputies say someone is approaching people near local banks, trying to get them to deposit a fraudulent check for them in exchange for cash. Deputies say this has been going on since the beginning of the year.
Police are looking at three recent cases. Two are in Sweden, one at an ESL bank, the other at MM&T bank. Another incident happened at an ESL bank in Hamlin.
"These people are in no danger, "said Sgt. Joseph Firpo of the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. "They are approached in public area and asked by someone who is a criminal, and a stranger, to deposit a check. I believe they are enticed by the reward- the money. "
Deputies say this scam has been around, and is nothing new. They also say Greece and Irondequoit may have some cases similar to this.
Deputies say if anyone is approached with this scam, they should say no to depositing the check.
People who are approached with this scam should call police.
