Riga, N.Y. (WHAM) - The motorcyclist killed in a crash on Buffalo Road in Riga Tuesday has been identified as a retired Monroe County Sheriff's deputy.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office said a motorcycle and sedan collided shortly after 2 p.m.

This happened on Buffalo Road near Fairbanks Road.

Deputies say Patrick Gaffney was traveling eastbound on Buffalo Road. They say the sedan was traveling westbound and trying to make a left turn onto Percy Road when the crash happened.

Gaffney was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital, where he later died. The driver of the sedan, as well as a passenger in the vehicle, were not hurt.

The sedan driver was ticketed for failing to yield the right of way. Deputies say alcohol, drugs and speed are not considered to have factored into the crash. The investigation is ongoing.

Deputies closed down the road between Fairbanks Road and Bromley Road, but re-opened the road about two hours later.

Gaffney had retired in July after 22 years of service as a member of the Jail Bureau. He spent most of his career on the overnight shift inside the Monroe County Jail.

Monroe County Sheriff Todd Baxter said Gaffney was known for his calm demeanor and consistent work ethic by his peers and supervisors.

"As one team, we mourn the loss of one of our own," Baxter said in a statement. "Our Peer Support team stands ready to assist as we try to cope with this difficult and unforeseen loss. Please join me in praying for Deputy Gaffney's family that they may find peace and comfort as they grieve this tragic and sudden loss.”
