Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) - A new director has been named to lead the Emergency Communications Department for the City of Rochester.

State Police Lt. Col. Michael Cerretto was announced Friday as the new department leader, which operates the 911 call center.

John Merkingler served as director until this past January.

Cerretto has served with the New York State Police Department for the past 31 years.

“My three decades in law enforcement have taught me that the men and women of 911 are the unsung heroes of successful emergency response," Cerretto said. "I look forward to working in Rochester and taking an already outstanding operation to the next level of excellence.”

Cerretto is scheduled to begin work on October 1 as long as the appointment is confirmed by the Rochester City Council.
