Pittsford, N.Y. (WHAM) - St. John Fisher College is getting a first-of-its-kind institute on campus.

Paychex co-founder and philanthropist Tom Golisano announced Tuesday that he is giving $5.8 million to the Pittsford college to create the Golisano Institute for Developmental Disability Nursing.

The institution will be integrated into St. John Fisher College's current Wegmans School of Nursing. It is designed to transform the healthcare and support systems for people with developmental disabilities.

"This institute will fill a gap that has existed for individuals and their families for too long," Golisano said. "Does a nurse know how to interact and assess me or my family member? Will the provider really be able to under stand what is going on physically and psychologically with me? And will I be able to receive the best care that I deserve just like everybody else? Now with the initiatives and outcomes of this institute the answer will be a resounding yes."

Leaders with St. John Fisher College said because the institute is the first of its kind, it will have not only a local but a national and international impact as well.
