Penfield, N.Y./Rochester, N.Y. - A Penfield High School student made it all the way to the finals in a national competition centered on William Shakespeare!
Elias Owens represented Rochester in the 35th Annual English-Speaking Union National Shakespeare Competition. He and 55 others from around the country, and Elias earned second place in the competition.
The competition requires students to analyze and perform works by William Shakespeare. About 20,000 students take part in regional competitions across the country.
This was the first time in the competition's history in which the winner of the Rochester Shakespeare Competition - which Owens won in March - became a national finalist.
Owens won a full scholarship to the American Shakespeare Center Theatre Camp. We're told he plans to pursue a BFA in musical theater from the University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music.
