Phelps teen arrested for stabbing mother several times

Brandon Schluter faces 1st degree assault charges after deputies said he stabbed his mother multiple times.

Phelps, N.Y. - A teenager's birthday celebration took a violent turn.

Now, Brandon Schluter, 17, of Phelps is in jail, and his mother is hospitalized with serious stab wounds. Schluter answered to assault charges Wednesday.

His bail was set at $10,000 cash, $20,000 shared bond, and his case was waived to a grand jury.

Investigator say Schluter stabbed his mother several times at a Phelps apartment Saturday afternoon, during a birthday party. Neighbors say they are trying to process the stabbing, describing Schluter as a nice teenager.

“He stabbed her, and he might be coming back and you don’t...I have two step-kids that are four and six, and I have a two-month-old, so it’s kinda nerve-wracking to know something happens like this in Newark,” said a witness who did not want to be identified.

Lieutenant Greg Shaffer with Ontario County Sheriff's Office says Schluter allegedly stabbed his mother, Nanci Barber, in the head and chest. Shaffer says, while the motive is unclear, he believes Barber may have threatened to take away her son's phone.

“We don’t know exactly what the details were in that, but certainly nothing that would cause anyone to be so upset that they would do what they did,” said Shaffer.

Shaffer says Schluter took off on his bike. Newark Police arrested him soon after. A witness says she often heard Schluter and his mother arguing in their apartment, but nothing that concerned her.

“His mom didn’t talk much and go out of the house," said the neighbor. "He seemed like a nice kid.”

Schluter is charged with first degree assault. His mother is in satisfactory condition at Strong Memorial Hospital.
