Police charge Gates woman with roommate's murder

Gates, N.Y. (WHAM) - A woman in Gates has been charged with murder in the stabbing death of her roommate Monday morning.

Doris Carrasquillo, 40, has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of Kashmire Redd.



Gates Police said Tuesday that Carrasquillo and Redd were in a relationship for the past few months and moved to Gates in June.

An altercation happened earlier Monday morning between to inside their apartment, ending when Redd was stabbed and killed. Police did not say Tuesday what the motive was behind the stabbing, or what caused the altercation.

Gates Police said they had previously been called to Carrasquillo's apartment, but would not comment on the nature of that call or who was involved.

Gates Police Chief James Vanbrederode called the incident a classic case of domestic violence.

"This is a problem in our community and it is a lethal problem," said Vanbrederode.

Police also said Redd was a transgender man.

Willow Domestice Violence Center CEO Jaime Saunders said Tuesday, transgender people are at a higher risk when it comes to being involved in violent relationships.

"30 to 50 percent of transgender people experience some form of intimate partner violence at some point in their lifetime," said Saunders.

Saunders and Vanbrederode both stressing to the community that help is out there to those who need it.

Willow Domestic Violence Center offers a number of resources for people in need of help. The Gay Alliance of Rochester can also direct people to any services that are needed.
