Rochester, N.Y. - Police have identified the man killed in Saturday's crash on Lake Avenue as 40-year-old Maurice Johnson.

Police say the car he was in was driving on Lake Avenue, when it turned onto Phelps Avenue and collided with a Jeep.

Neighbors say they see crashes on Lake Avenue and Phelps Avenue often, but that this one was more unnerving. This is because the driver allegedly at fault for the crash fled the scene, leaving Johnson trapped in the vehicle.

Police are still searching for that driver. They were on scene Monday searching the area near Lake Avenue asking neighbors if they have any information that may help with the search.

Joseph King was a witness to the crash.

“I was coming down from the street shopping and I heard a loud, 'pow!' That was it. It was loud too, it was like a bomb," said King. "First thing in my mind? Somebody died."

Debris from the crash is still on the ground in the area.

“I walked out the building, I seen a car. It was just destroyed,” said King. “I can't even describe that.”

Johnson had to be pulled from the vehicle by Rochester firefighters. He and two women, who were occupants of the Jeep, were taken to the hospital.

Johnson later died from his injuries at Strong Memorial Hospital.

“Everybody come down here, and they couldn't believe it themselves," said King. "They was kinda shell shocked."

No arrests have been made. The cause of the crash is still unclear.

The women who were in the Jeep remain in the hospital with minor injuries.

Anyone with information on the hit-and-run is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 423-9300.
