Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) - Rochester police are investigating after a man was shot and killed on Genesee Street Christmas Day.

It happened near the intersection of Genesee Street and Kirkland Road around 5:30 p.m.

Police say an officer was driving on Genesee Street when they thought they heard gunshots. After the officer turned around, they saw a man's body. The victim has been identified as Jarvis Porter, 35, of Rochester.

RPD's Major Crime Unit was called in to investigate.

The investigation was initially delayed because police were unsure if the area was safe and had to check more locations.

On top of that, the cold temperature is making this investigation difficult.

"The conditions are really extreme out here," said Rochester police captain Tony McMullen. "We have to keep cycling our officers out of the cold and get them into some warmth. So it's been a long evening."

Police say it's especially disheartening to be investigating a homicide on Christmas night.

"It's really sad that we're investigating the death of somebody," said captain McMullen. "I was just talking to a civilian on the way here, inquiring what was happening. Told them someone was shot, they were just in disbelief, as we are. But, we're here, we're doing our job and hopefully we'll find somebody responsible for this and get them into custody."

According to police, Porter died at the scene.

No suspects are in custody at this time.

Rochester Police confirmed that Porter was one of four people shot earlier this year at the same intersection.
