Pregnant inmate who escaped from hospital indicted by grand jury

19-year-old Aliyah Burden was indicted on two counts of second degree escape, first degree reckless endangerment, third degree unlawful fleeing of a police officer in a motor vehicle, and petit larceny.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHAM) - A pregnant Monroe County Jail inmate who escaped from Strong Memorial Hospital last month was indicted by a grand jury on multiple charges.

19-year-old Aliyah Burden was indicted on two counts of second degree escape, first degree reckless endangerment, third degree unlawful fleeing of a police officer in a motor vehicle, and petit larceny.

The charges stem from an incident where Burden was being guarded by a Monroe County Sheriff’s deputy in the maternity ward at Strong on April 30. She reportedly created a diversion to distract the deputy and fled from the room.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, University of Rochester Medical Center Security, Rochester Police, and New York State Police searched the hospital for Burden for hours.

She was apprehended outside the parking garage entrance a few hours later and was taken back into the custody of the Sheriff's Office.
