Penfield, N.Y. – The Monroe County Sheriff says the man believed to have killed his wife and severely beat his mother used a hammer in the latter attack.

Arnold Ford, Jr. died by suicide in Erie, Pennsylvania following Wednesday’s incidents.

Sheriff Todd Baxter tells 13WHAM Ford used a hammer to try to kill his 75-year-old mother, Florence, at her Riga home.

Ford is also accused of killing his wife, Wendy, at their Penfield home. Deputies responded to the couple’s home that morning to check on Mr. Ford’s welfare when his employer became concerned over a rambling email he sent, saying he wouldn’t be in for work.

“We’re trying to piece the picture together of this incident,” Sheriff Baxter said. “We’ve got weeks and weeks of going through emails and going through phone records and going through interviews and going through interviews of acquaintances and things like that, trying to put a picture together of this guy’s life.”

Florence Ford remains in guarded condition at Strong Memorial Hospital.
