Rochester, N.Y. – Local sixth graders traded their pencils for paintbrushes Friday!

Students at Genesee Community Charter School kicked off a mural art project as part of EL Education’s “Better World Day.”

They’ve been studying different neighborhoods and talking with residents about their hopes, dreams and needs, so that each mural would reflect each community.

“There’s only so much ELA and math kids can take,” said Chris Dolgos, “so when kids can see that writing and reading about real people and people’s experiences can translate to things like a mural project, kids are excited to be a part of it.”

“It feels really good to see how we could make a positive impact and help people,” said sixth grader Aliyah Townsend.

The school was awarded a grant to help pay for the cost of supplies.
