A SUNY Brockport alumnus, whose racecar-themed speech on graduation day got noticed by NASCAR, scored himself a job around his passion.
Elijah Burke of Greece landed a job with Chip Ganassi Racing, according to his alma mater.
Ganassi has been a fixture in the racing world for over 30 years, first as a driver, then as one of the most prominent owners.
When Burke graduated in May, 2018, he recorded a thank you video to those who helped him along the way, but did it in the style of the NASCAR drivers after they win a race. Towel over the shoulder, sunglasses, even the laundry list of "sponsors."
"I can't thank all the guys back at the shop enough - Mom, Dad, Emma. The wife and kids I don't have at home,” Burke says in the video. "All the sponsors that put everything into this - Quizlet, Netflix, Chegg, Rate My Professor, Dunkin Donuts, Monster Energy and Credit One Bank of course. Everyone who put so much energy into this."
Burke's video took off on Twitter, earning him a response from NASCAR.
NASCAR replied to his tweet, with a GIF of driver Bubba Wallace with the caption, “Nailed it. Happy Graduation Day!”
On Tuesday, the College at Brockport gave Burke a shoutout and congrats of their own on the university's Twitter page. It included the good news: that Burke had landed a job at Chip Ganassi Racing, in the motorsports career he was pursuing.
