A 16-year-old from Geneva has been charged with DWI and is recovering in Strong Hospital after crashing her vehicle, according to Ontario County Sheriff's Deputies.

It happened around 12:30 PM Friday afternoon on McIvor Road in the Town of Phelps.

The teen needed to be transported via mercy flight with leg and arm injures after police say she drifted off of the south side of the road striking a cement culvert head wall and sideswiped a utility pole before coming to a stop, according to deputies.

An investigation revealed that the accident was caused because the teen fell asleep at the wheel due to drug or alcohol impairment.

The teen was charged with DWI and driving under the impairment of drugs. She will appear in the Town of Phelps court at a later date to answer these charges.
