Truck driver sentenced for distracted driving crash that killed Rochester woman
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) -- A truck driver has been sentenced to prison for causing a fatal crash on the New York State Thruway that happened while he was online and speeding through a construction zone.
Kristofer Gregorek was sentenced in Buffalo Wednesday to 1 1/2 to 4 1/2 years in prison for the June 2017 crash that killed Ellen Volpe, a University at Buffalo assistant professor from Rochester.
Investigators say the 28-year-old truck driver from Ballston Spa in Saratoga County was traveling at 70 mph and using his cellphone when he rear-ended Volpe's car near a suburban Buffalo exit. He pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter in February.
At his sentencing, Gregorek apologized for causing Volpe's death.
