Uber, Lyft to operate in Rochester on Thursday
Rochester, N.Y. - In two days, we'll be able to take an Uber or Lyft wherever we want to go in Rochester.
The city held job fairs for both companies over the past month where hundreds signed up to become drivers.
Bishop Jeffery Melvin, of Power House Kingdom Cathedral Church of God in Christ, was one of them. He drives for Lyft too.
"I’m ready,” he said. “I’m very excited. I’m going to get up that morning and go wait. Wait for my first call."
He wouldn’t say where he'll be camping out.
"I'm going to be a place where there's a lot of traffic, and where they need rides," Melvin said.
Ridesharing apps go live at 12.01 a.m. Thursday. So that Wednesday night crowd can catch a ride.
Derek Diriso said ridesharing is easier than learning the bus schedule, and cheaper than hailing a taxi.
He hopes to get rid of his car soon.
"I think to try it out on Thursday that would be a cool sort of thing,” Diriso said. “I’d have that more flexible route of just having some freelancer come pick me up.”
Noah Fehrenbach said he’d use the service for his finance business as well as socially.
“I don’t get out near as much as I’d love to with four kids,” he said. “But when we do, being able to enjoy it and have a few drinks with my wife, and not have to worry about can we make it home safe tonight. That’s a huge positive.”
Jackson Baron was in a jam earlier today and could have used a lift.
"I had to get my brother to drive me, and he hates driving me places, in all honestly,” Baron said. “In that situation, I would have just called an Uber or Lyft."
At this time, Lyft drivers can pick up passengers at the Rochester airport.
They'll do that at the valet section, after waiting in the cell phone lot. Riders will be charged a $2 pickup and drop off fee.
Uber has yet to settle its agreement with airport leaders.
"I'm going to get my black hat, I got my car. I’m going to be professional,” Melvin said. “I keep my car clean. Yes, ma'am come on in; where are you going ma'am? "
Melvin hopes to use the extra cash toward ministry of building wells in Rwanda, Africa.
New Lyft riders get $5 off their first ride using a promotional code.
