Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) - Volunteer fire companies and fire stations across New York are gearing up for their big recruitment push this weekend.

Monroe County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo, Monroe Fire Bureau Coordinator Steve Schalabba, and Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) President Ken Pienkowski gathered Thursday afternoon to celebrate the 8th annual RecruitNY weekend.

The initiative, which is run by FASNY, aims to bring in more volunteer firefighters for communities in need. The RecruitNY initiative helps increase volunteer firefighter membership and connects local fire stations with the communities they serve.

Tours of firehouses, firefighting demonstrations, and fun activities for families are all part of the plan this weekend.

“Serving as a volunteer firefighter means serving one’s community, but it also means joining a very close, very special family," Pienkowski said.
