North Chili, N.Y. (WHAM) - A simple lunch date with family turned into so much more for a 94-year-old WWII veteran on Friday.

Henry Ross, who lives in North Chili, was surprised with five medals and awards for his military service while at his niece's home.

New York State Assemblyman Joe Morelle was at the house, along with a representative for the late Congresswoman Louise Slaughter.

"I'm deeply touched," Ross said. "Honestly, this is a great honor. I'll cherish these for as many months and years as I have left to live."

Ross flew 50 missions with the U.S. Army Air Corps - the precursor to the U.S. Air Force.

Before the surprise ceremony on Friday, Ross had received a Purple Heart for being injured while serving his country.
