Ending Title 42 'defies logic and common sense,' says ex-border official

WASHINGTON (TND) — Arizona Democratic Senators Kyrsten Sinema and Mark Kelly sent a letter to President Joe Biden urging he should not end Title 42, a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention order that expels migrants back to their country of origin in an attempt to slow the spread of COVID-19 between countries.

“To date, we have not yet seen evidence that DHS has developed and implemented a sufficient plan to maintain a human and orderly process in the event of an end to Title 42,” said Sinema and Kelly in the letter.

According to former acting commissioner of Customs and Border Protection Mark Morgan, Title 42 has “been effective” in the fight against COVID-19.

“It was a policy that was implemented by the Trump administration and has continued during the entirety of the Biden administration, which has resulted in over a million illegal aliens to be removed from this country to protect our country,” said Morgan to The National Desk’s Jan Jeffcoat. “It saved countless American lives and prevented untold suffering.”

The effectiveness of Title 42 in stopping the spread of COVID-19 has been contested, including by White House medical advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci.

Certainly immigrants can get infected, but they’re not the driving force of this, let’s face reality here,” said Fauci on CNN in October. “My feeling has always been that focusing on immigrants, expelling them ... is not the solution to an outbreak.”

But amidst reports of a new omicron subvariant, BA.2, Morgan said to remove Title 42 “defies logic and common sense.”

“There are many countries of which the illegal aliens are coming from which are way behind our ability to actually deal with that,” said Morgan.

According to Morgan, removing Title 42 will also be “yet another incentive for more illegal immigration, as Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz estimates upwards of 8,000 migrant apprehensions per day could “become the norm.”

“The facilities are already dangerously overcrowded. And when we start seeing those numbers, which we've already started to see flow in, it's going to be crushing. There's going to be nothing for them to be able to do except release individuals as fast as possible,” said Morgan. “Many of these individuals we're not going to know anything about. We are not going to know who they are. It's simply going to endanger America, and it's going to cost lives.”

U.S. Customs and Border Protection are projecting more than 200,000 detentions along the Mexican border in March, as reported by The Washington Post. Last week, the Biden administration announced new procedures to handle asylum claims at the U.S. southern border quicker, aiming to decide in months instead of years.

"What they've done with this rule is they basically dismantled the entire asylum process; now, a basic officer has the full authority to grant asylum,” said Morgan. "You're going to see hundreds of thousands of fraudulent asylum claims now being granted.”
