Albany, N.Y. (WHAM) - The Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance is offering to buy air conditioning units or fans for New Yorkers who have serious health issues that are made worse by extreme heat.

Governor Cuomo announced Friday that $3 million has been set aside to pay for the cooling assistance.

People who want to apply need to meet existing HEAP eligibility criteria and income guidelines. A household of four can earn up to $53,482 a year or $4,457 a month, and still qualify for assistance.

The fans and A/C units will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Applications will be accepted through August 31, or until funding runs out.

Anyone interested in applying for the help can do so through the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) at their local department of social services. The contact information can be found here.
