Father, girlfriend charged in 3-year-old Greece girl's death
Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) - The father of a three-year-old girl in Greece who died last month has been charged in her death, along with the man's girlfriend.
Court paperwork shows Michael Stagles, the father of Brook Stagles, was charged with criminally negligent homicide Thursday morning.
Stagles' girlfriend, Erica Bell, was charged with 2nd degree murder and 1st degree manslaughter in Brook's death.
"What you have here is a case of child abuse, unfortunately this case is not unlike many we see in our community," said Monroe County Assistant District Attorney Sara Vanstrydonck. "I think when a child is injured and you have a case of a child abuse, there's a difference between criminal responsibility and moral responsibility and in this case based on our investigation. And the grand jury action, we are accusing two people that are criminally responsible for Brook's death. We intent to prove without a reasonable doubt that those two people were criminally responsible for Brook's death."
Brook died November 14, one day after being taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
Her grandfather, John Geer, has said for several weeks he believes she was beaten to death. On Thursday, he said he wasn't surprised by the arrests.
"All this could have been prevented and Brook went through tremendous pain because it wasn't," said Geer. "I know they're going to get the maximum and I know that I'm going to fight now for children that are being abused."
Brook was taken to Rochester General Hospital by Michael Stagles, on November 13, according to Geer.
Geer says Brook's injuries were so severe doctors asked if she had been hit by a car.
The Monroe County Medical Examiner and Rochester Police ruled the death a homicide.
