Increase in flu cases in NYS
New York - The number of flu cases in New York State is on the rise.
The latest report from the State Health Department shows a 42 percent increase in flu cases over the last week alone.
The report found a 34 percent increase in the number of patients hospitalized for the flu.
John Ricci, Senior Public Health Educator for the Monroe County Health Department, says he isn't sure that the number of those infected with the flu has peaked in the county.
"Over the past couple weeks we are seeing an increase. That said our cases are so low that it has to be taken into account. We are nowhere near the levels of the last two years," said Ricci.
Ricci says the flu sometimes lingers well into May, or even June. However, it's too early to tell if that will happen this year, but it is possible.
Doctors say the best defense is the flu vaccine, and it is not too late to get it.
