Will Butcher made his decision on Sunday, and he didn't choose Buffalo.

The Hobey Baker award winner chose to sign a two-year entry-level contract with the New Jersey Devils.

It is the second straight season that the Sabres were in the mix for the nation's top college hockey player, but were unable to close the deal. Buffalo was in the running for Jimmy Vesey last year, but he eventually decided to sign with the New York Rangers.

Butcher scored 37 points on the blue line at the University of Denver last year, leading the Pioneers to the National Championship.

Buffalo hoped that a talented young core that includes Jack Eichel, along with having a hall of fame defenseman as head coach in Phil Housley, would help entice Butcher to come to Western New York.
