Sabres protect 11, leave Ullmark exposed to expansion draft
The list of players the Sabres protected ahead of Wednesday's expansion draft was largely predictable, given the rules.
Buffalo protected seven forwards, three defensemen, and a goalie:
Forwards: Zemgus Girgensons, Marcus Foligno, Evander Kane, Ryan O'Reilly, Johan Larsson, Kyle Okposo, Tyler Ennis
Defensemen: Nathan Beaulieu, Jake McCabe, Rasmus Ristolainen
Goalie: Robin Lehner
If the Sabres could have protected two goalies, you get the feeling they would have. But as it is, they were forced to leave Linus Ullmark exposed. The 23-year-old was an all-star with the Rochester Americans last year and was just re-signed to a two-year deal with Buffalo. But he is considered one of the most likely players who could be targeted by the Golden Knights on Wednesday.
Other notable players left unprotected include Brian Gionta, Zack Bogosian, Matt Moulson, and Josh Gorges.
Gionta is currently a free agent, and is not expected to be selected by Las Vegas.
Most players were exempt from the expansion draft process (first and second year professionals, or unsigned draft picks).
