Brian Gionta named captain of U.S. Olympic Men's Hockey Team
Brian Gionta is used to having the "C" on his sweater. But this one carries even more weight than usual.
The 38-year-old was named captain of the United States Olympic Men's Hockey Team Monday.
Gionta has been captain of two NHL franchises, the Canadiens and most recently the Buffalo Sabres. He has not played in the NHL this season, partly to prepare for international play. This is the first time since 1994 that NHL players will not be playing in the Olympic games.
The Greece native has spent some time this offseason practicing with the hometown Amerks to help himself prepare for what he hoped would be the Olympics.
The 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea begin in February.
