Hops (Wings) top Bisons 2-0

Rochester, NY - The Rochester Red Wings - playing as the Hop Bitters, a nod to the 1879-1880 Rochester ball club - defeated the Buffalo Bisons 2-0 Saturday night at Frontier Field. The teams meet again Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m.; it's another Bark in the Park game, a Knot Hole Kids' Club game, and kids can run the bases with Spikes and Mittsy after the game

After three and a half scoreless innings, Wynston Sawyer brought Kenny Vargas home from second base on a single to left field off of Bisons' starter Chris Rowley to give the Hop Bitters a 1-0 lead. Vargas had hustled into second on a fielding error, and his aggressive baserunning provided the first run.

The Hop Bitters added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single to right field from Nick Gordon, making the score 2-0. It was Gordon's first Triple-A RBI.

Dietrich Enns threw 5.2 scoreless innings, giving up only three hits and two walks and striking out five on 94 pitches, 57 of them for strikes. Alan Busenitz took over with two outs and two on in the sixth, and struck out Jason Leblebijian to end the rally attempt.

Chris Rowley's day ended after 6.0 innings pitched for the Bisons, throwing 65 strikes on 92 pitches, giving up seven hits and no walks with seven strikeouts, while allowing two runs, one of which was earned.

Busenitz added 2.1 scoreless relief innings, allowing one hit while striking out four. Nick Anderson worked the ninth inning, setting down the side.

The Hops out-hit the Bisons 6-4.
